Junior Leader Program

The ALA Junior Leader program has grown significantly! At last year’s “Kick-off” conference we served 56 area schools. Since the programs inception, literally thousands of junior leaders lives have been changed by this program.

We have exciting new programming that gives Junior Leaders more opportunities for hands-on learning to expand their leadership skills!

Every March after the Youth Leadership “Kick-off” Conference, young leaders are invited to train with ALA year-round in the Junior Leader Program. This in-depth training gives the leaders further experience in practicing leadership traits, improving communication skills, and giving in service to the community. Junior Leaders are responsible for attending service projects in their community and many Junior Leaders are challenged to organize and conduct their own service projects. These projects have opened the door for the new structure of the program.

 Making a Difference

The Junior Leader Program has been run by a dedicated group of volunteers, each with their own strengths and experiences. They are now able to use their personal expertise to more closely guide the Junior Leaders in their training. There are now nine committees in this program, each one focused on one area: Health, Social Service, Art/Music, Animals, Environment, Money Management/Life Skills, Commitment to Youth, projects devoted to the Fred Young Farm Labor Center, and projects focused in Orange County.

Broadened Approach to Leadership

Each group teaches the same set of leadership, communication, and teambuilding skills but focuses the learning in a specific area. Junior Leaders may stay with one focus area for an entire year, or broaden their leadership experience by meeting with different committees throughout the year. Each committee has a schedule of activities, service, and fieldtrips to help leaders become more aware of current issues and needs in the community. Junior Leaders put their leadership into action and learn important lessons about citizenship, respect for all people, and making the most of their lives.

The Junior Leaders are also trained to assist at the “Kick-off” Conference where they put on skits portraying real-life problems, help new leaders learn to solve problems, and act as student mentors. Their experience in the year-round training gives them the skills, confidence, and compassion to make a difference in the lives of new leaders each year.
